Yvette Nackenson passed away peacefully on September 19, 2021, at Willow Towers Assisted Living facility in New Rochelle, New York. She was one week short of her 94th birthday. She was born to Clara and Morris Schwedock in Cleveland, Ohio on September 27, 1927, but moved to Albany within a few years, where she spent most of her life. Yiddish being the home language, she only learned English after her older brother Bernie started kindergarten. She graduated Albany High School as the valedictorian of the business section, but was able attend New York State Teachers’ College, adjacent to the old Albany High School building, after finding out it was free. She never had a career as a teacher but worked as a bookkeeper until starting a family. She met Jerry Nackenson at a Jewish singles dance, and they married on June 14, 1953. He pre-deceased her in 2019. They had two children, Marcia (Bruce Turkle) and Steven (Barbara).
Yvette returned to the work force when Marcia started college, and was an administrative assistant for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance until her retirement. She was active at Temple Beth Emeth of Albany, played bridge, doted on her four grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Andrea, and Josh, and traveled widely with Jerry, including China, Israel, and Europe. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Graveside services will be held at the Independent Benevolent Society on Fuller Road in Albany at 11:30 AM on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Shiva will be observed at the homes of Marcia Nackenson in New Rochelle, New York, and Steven Nackenson in Milburn, New Jersey.
